Sustainable Revival: Selma Lagerl?f Center in Gothenburg Leads in Circular Design

Read: 2250

Selma Lagerl?f District in Gothenburg embodies vibrancy, beauty and creativity. At its core is the Selma Lagerl?fs Center - a unique civic building that serves dual roles as both a municipal hub and cultural hub. This center promotes circularity with an impressive 92 of furniture being reused, which results in cost savings by up to 70 compared to using new materials.

The multifunctional center houses a variety of facilities including administrative offices for the city, a library, theater, cafe and restaurant, meeting rooms, media studios, dance halls, and music spaces. The integration of cultural programming with municipal administration under one roof presents an intriguing design challenge that White Arkitekter's team addressed by creating flexible spaces that can accommodate both.

The exterior design highlights the dynamic activities occurring within, making every facade equally detled so there is no distinction between front and back entrances. Additionally, there is no visual hierarchy from the outside for any program areas.

In 2020, Selma Lagerl?f Center was awarded the prestigious Design S - Swedish Design Awards in interior architecture category highlighting its unique design elements.

Key takeaways from this project are how essential it is to have a clear process and ambitious targets for successful reuse projects early on. The mn goals include setting material re-use targets and establishing timelines. Selma Lagerl?f Center serves as an inspiring example of circular architecture, showing that adapting the design process and utilizing existing structures can significantly contribute to the transition towards more sustnable building practices.

The project was completed in 2019.
