Introduction:
This pioneering educational initiative, the Center for Traditional Culture – School Museum of Pusol Pedagogic Project, is a integrating local cultural heritage within formal education curricula. Established in 1968 at the rural one-teacher public school in Elche, Spn, this project successfully interweaves heritage preservation into educational activities through collaboration with teachers and external experts. Children explore their rich Elche heritage by engaging directly with traditional bearers, conducting fieldwork, creating museography, and teaching both peers and visitors about cultural assets.
Significance:
The project embodies a democratic, inclusive, and participatory approach that serves as an exemplary framework for bottom-up heritage conservation worldwide. By nurturing children's engagement in documenting their surroundings through data collection, museum practices are democratized, allowing young minds to contribute actively to local memory preservation. This initiative has not only impacted Elche's rural community but has expanded its influence across the entire Elche countryside and eventually incorporated the urban core of Elche.
Key Elements:
Community Collaboration: Children collaborate with local heritage holders in data collection activities, which not only enriches their knowledge base but also fosters a sense of community pride.
Museography and Education: The school museum's development involves educational practices akin to museography, allowing children to actively participate in the curation process and further disseminate cultural knowledge.
Cultural Mapping: The project encourages systematic documentation of local heritage resources, resulting in extensive catalogues and oral histories that preserve everyday life through 61,000 inventory entries and over 770 oral files.
Sustnable Development Goals:
SDG4: Quality Education: By integrating cultural heritage into the curriculum, this project promotes educational quality by fostering critical thinking, creativity, and cultural awareness among students.
SDG16: Peace, Justice Strong Institutions: The project's participatory nature enhances social cohesion and mutual respect for cultural diversity, contributing to peaceful communities.
