Welcome to the Journey Museum, your gateway to exploring a vast journey through 3 billion years of history. We connect you with the narratives behind the ancient landscapes and cultures of western South Dakota, encompassing perspectives from the Lakota people, pioneering settlers, scientists studying this region, and beyond.

From the profound depths of time to the luminous cosmos above us, we provide immersive experiences that bridge the gap between our past and future. Discover how each story contributes to a cohesive narrative that enriches our understanding of place and people.

In the Star Room, you'll step into darkness to gaze upon an illuminated night sky filled with constellations and galaxies. This is where astronomical perspectives from both scientific inquiry and cultural heritage intertwine, offering profound insights into our origins and connections to celestial bodies.

Travel through time in our interactive displays that highlight the Mesozoic Era, when dinosaurs roamed across South Dakota. Encounter iconic creatures like the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Allosaurus, and even dive into the world of the Triceratops - perhaps the most celebrated state fossil. Engage with activities designed for young adventurers to simulate bone hunting in a dig pit or create a volcanic eruption.

Venture into the heart of geological processes that formed the Black Hills over millions of years. Experience this rich history through our unique stratigraphic rock wall, where you can touch and feel ancient granites that now define the peaks of Black Elk Peak, among others.

Uncover the narratives of early settlers in the region dating back 12,000 years with exhibits that showcase the Clovis people's hunting of mammoths and creation of rock art. Explore our collection of Lakota art, including intricate beadwork clothing, ornaments, winter counts, traditional tipis, and buffalo hides. These artifacts offer a profound appreciation for Lakota craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

Relive the dramatic era of pioneer days through historical accounts of conflict and expansion that shaped the American West. Learn about significant events like the Custer Expedition and Battle of Little Bighorn and see how the discovery of gold sparked a nation's imagination.

Venture further into contemporary times with exhibits that reflect life on the prrie from the 1930s to today. Explore the aftermath of the Black Hills Flood of 1972, which tragically took 238 lives, alongside the resilience and recovery efforts of communities. Engage with interactive displays about the natural history of the Black Hills, understand how forests have evolved over time, and perhaps even imagine yourself soaring through space in our Stratobowl exhibit.

Located at 222 New York Street, Rapid City, SD 57701, we are open Wednesdays to Saturdays from 10am - 5pm and Sundays from 1pm - 5pm. Our doors are open for you to embark on this unforgettable journey of discovery.

Explore the boundless stories that define our region's rich tapestry – past, present, and future. Join us at the Journey Museum to uncover what makes this land so unique and celebrate the connection between history and the natural world that surrounds us.
