We are thrilled to announce the biannual Exhibition + Experience Design symposium set for June 20th and 21st, 2024, located at the innovative Planet Word venue in Washington D.C. The theme Transformational Impact of Exhibition and Experience Design highlight the pivotal role design plays in addressing complex global challenges.
Day One: A dynamic day kicked off by keynote speeches and case studies from esteemed leaders in the field will set the stage for this symposium. These sessions are meticulously crafted to demonstrate how exhibition designers are shaping societal change through their innovative practices. The discussions cover pressing issues such as climate change, societal divisions, community engagement, decolonization, and technology ethicschallenges that demand urgent attention.
Day Two: Engage in interactive workshops designed for rapid ideation, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving, offering you the unique opportunity to delve deeply into these themes. This is your chance to connect with peers passionate about designing impactful experiences.
We are honored to welcome Tim McNeil and Tricia Austin as our symposium chrs. Tim McNeil, a distinguished professor at UC Davis Design Museum and author of The Exhibition and Experience Design Handbook, shares his wealth of knowledge on design's transformative power. Tricia Austin, a leading design researcher and PhD supervisor at Central Snt Martins, brings her expertise in narrative environments and participatory design to the table.
Together with Tim McNeil and Tricia Austin, we are proud to collaborate on an upcoming book for Princeton Press that will document how exhibition and experience design can drive societal transformation. The symposium will also feature key takeaways from this research:

We are delighted to introduce Waqas Jawd and Andy Chen from Isometric Studio, based in New York City. Collaborating with leading institutions, they champion inclusivity, equity, and justice through innovative design solutions on vital social issues.
Waqas Jawd: Partner at Isometric Studio with a background that includes honors from Princeton University, an MFA from Harvard Graduate School of Design, and experience working at prestigious firms like the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, SANAA, Harvard Art Museums, Skidmore Owings Merrill. He is also a founder of Climate Collective, promoting civic discourse on climate change through design.
Andy Chen: Partner with a background in sociology from Princeton University and graphic design from Rhode Island School of Design RISD. His career includes work at Pentagram before becoming a Fulbright Scholar at the Royal College of Art. Andy serves as a contributor to platforms like Design Observer, Design Taxi, and Open Manifesto.
