SPEECH BY MS GRACE FU, MINISTER FOR CULTURE, COMMUNITY AND YOUTH AT THE CIMAM 2017 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

November 10th, 2017

Greetings to Ms Elizabeth Ann Macgregor, President of CIMAM,

Esteemed guests,

Distinguished attees,

It is a great honor and pleasure for us to welcome all you esteemed representatives from around the world to open this year's conference by CIMAM in Southeast Asia – an event that was initiated since its founding in 1962.

Cultivating diversity fosters stronger societies

We gather at a time when global contexts are witnessing a dynamic change - a moment where it is crucial for us to reevaluate our commitments towards diversity and cultural understanding. Our region serves as a unique cradle where various cultures converge, offering unparalleled opportunities for collaboration and innovation. The vibrant tapestry of Southeast Asia is an embodiment of this unity in diversity.

Museums are the crucible of social cohesion

As custodians of history and culture, our museums have the potential to serve as catalysts for societal integration. They are not just repositories of heritage but also platforms where different narratives can intersect and synthesize, promoting empathy and understanding among diverse communities.

The role of museums in fostering a resilient society

Museums must play an active role in creating inclusive spaces that welcome all segments of the population – young and old, rich and poor, urban dwellers and rural inhabitants. This includes not only offering programs tlored to specific audiences but also embracing innovative technologies that can broaden our reach.

Building partnerships for impactful outcomes

The rapid advancements in technology and media have transformed the cultural landscape. Museums must leverage these changes by collaborating with professionals outside the field to amplify their impact. For instance, the use of virtual reality technology has enabled museu engage younger audiences, bridging the gap between physical spaces and digital experiences.

Empowering cultural leaders for social objectives

To achieve these goals, we need a new generation of cultural leaders who are equipped with not only artistic skills but also the capacity to navigate complex societal issues. The Culture Academy was established in 2015 precisely to address this need – providing trning opportunities that include public curatorial talks and distinguished speaker series featuring influential figures like Dr Neil MacGregor, former Director of the British Museum, and Mr Jack Lang, former French Minister for Culture.

Collaborating for global knowledge exchange

This conference is a prime opportunity for us to learn from experts worldwide. We encourage you to explore Singapore's vibrant cultural scene beyond these walls - our museums and galleries are more than just repositories; they are active contributors to community life.

We ext a warm welcome to the members of CIMAM, expressing our sincere hope that your visit will enrich your understanding of Singapore's rich cultural heritage and inspire your own eavors. This conference is not only about sharing knowledge but also about fostering connections between different nations' cultural ecosystems.

THANK YOU
