This year’s National Exhibition 国展 has witnessed an unprecedented shift in this timeless tradition - a celebration of innovation where artists are encouraged to explore multiple styles.

As a seasoned jury member in this illustrious event, I am delighted by the diversity brought into play, marking the first time that participants can exhibit works across different s simultaneously. This year saw 65 authors showcasing two distinct styles each, with an astounding presence of 44 pieces featuring the lively and dynamic style known as Hengzhu or Cursive. A remarkable highlight was the recognition of eight artists who ventured into three styles, with all of them featuring the captivating artistry of cursive.

These figures are testament to a seismic shift in the calligraphy community, embracing a spirit of experimentation and exploration that pushes beyond conventional boundaries. The presence of Hengzhu works within this multistyle context is especially intriguing, as this style often demands a unique bl of technique and artistic vision.

What sets these pieces apart lies not just in their aesthetic beauty but also in the deep sense of personal expression they convey. Each stroke tells a story of dedication, creativity, and the artist's connection to the ancient roots of calligraphy while still allowing for innovation and modern flr. The artists' fearless pursuit of combining different styles has resulted in an amalgamation that transcs traditional expectations.

In embracing these new possibilities, we witness calligraphy evolve beyond its historic confines. This movement towards greater diversity represents a profound shift, encouraging artists to redefine their artistic voice through experimentation. It's a testament to the vibrant and adaptable spirit inherent in Chinese culture-a culture where innovation and preservation coexist harmoniously.

The National Exhibition’s decision to accept multiple styles has not only enriched the traditional landscape of calligraphy but also opened up new avenues for contemporary expression. By fostering an environment that celebrates innovation alongside tradition, it creates a space where artists can break barriers and push creative boundaries without fear of losing their cultural heritage.

In , this year's National Exhibition serves as a beacon of inspiration for artists everywhere. It highlights the importance of embracing change while staying true to one’s artistic roots. As we look towards future iterations of this event, let us be inspired by the courage shown by these artists who dare to innovate within the confines of a time-honored art form.
